What Causes Near Sightedness?

New Research from Northwestern Medicine shows promising results.

Myopia, or nearsightedness is generally caused by the eye being too long.  This results in the image getting focused in front of the retina, creating blur when one looks at distance objects.  As children develop, it is important for the eye to grow to the exact right size as 1mm in extra length can cause 3.00 diopters of myopia.  (20/100 vision)

The research found that a newly discovered cell in the retina which is sensitive to light controls the eyes rate of growth and thus the myopia.

This research, funded by the NIH (National Institute of Health) could potentially find a new pharmaceutical target to slow the progression of myopia.
