A school gym can become a place for eye care. In Salinas, Dr. Craig Fellers joined a volunteer clinic where examination equipment, frame displays, and a team of eye-care volunteers came together for students.
The photographs show the clinic at El Sausal Middle School, with VSP Eyes of Hope equipment and volunteers. An October 2024 report from the California Assembly Speaker’s office describes the school’s participation in a Central Coast effort to provide free eye examinations and eyewear. Dr. Fellers’ participation and the photographs come from the practice’s own records.

Time to check vision and answer questions
Dr. Fellers helped with eye examinations at the clinic. The photographs show him working with a phoropter, the instrument used to compare lens choices during a prescription assessment, and examining a student’s eye with a handheld instrument. These are familiar parts of eye care brought into a setting students already know.
A conversation about vision gives a person time to describe what feels clear, what feels difficult, and what they notice during the day. At a volunteer clinic, that individual attention is part of the work alongside the equipment and measurements.
A team effort, from examination to eyewear
The clinic brought together people working at examination stations and an eyewear table. Volunteers helped make space for students to have their vision checked and look at frames. The photos capture several parts of that shared effort.
