Urgent eye care in Santa Cruz

We evaluate urgent eye problems during office hours, including red eyes, suspected infections, inflammation, and foreign material on the eye’s surface. Call first so we can assess the urgency and direct you to the right setting. A same-day appointment depends on clinical need and availability; some problems require an emergency department or ophthalmologist immediately.

Foreign body removal and scratches

Dust, plant material, or metal can injure the cornea. We examine the surface, look for embedded material, and remove superficial foreign bodies when appropriate. We also assess for infection, deeper injury, and any follow-up needs. High-speed metal injuries, sharp-object injuries, or suspected penetration require emergency care. Do not rub the eye or try to remove an embedded object yourself.

Conjunctivitis: not every red eye is the same

Pink eye may be caused by a virus, bacteria, allergies, or irritation. Treatment depends on the cause; antibiotics do not treat viral or allergic conjunctivitis. Contact-lens wearers with a painful red eye need prompt evaluation because a corneal infection can be serious. Remove contact lenses and avoid wearing them again until your clinician advises it.

Iritis and other inflammation

Iritis is inflammation in the front of the eye. It can cause pain, redness, light sensitivity, and blurred vision. We evaluate suspected inflammation and manage appropriate cases, coordinating additional testing or specialist care when needed. Steroid eye drops require a diagnosis and follow-up; do not reuse leftover drops without an examination.

Flashes, floaters, or a curtain in your vision

A sudden increase in floaters, new flashes, or a shadow or curtain over your vision can signal a retinal tear or detachment. These symptoms need urgent assessment, even if the eye is not painful. National Eye Institute: retinal detachment.

Chemical exposure

For a chemical splash, begin rinsing immediately with clean lukewarm running water or saline for at least 20 minutes while arranging urgent medical help. Do not delay rinsing to call us or find a special solution. Remove contact lenses if they come out easily; do not force them. If an object has penetrated the eye, do not rinse or press on it—seek emergency care. AAO EyeWiki: chemical eye injuries.

PRACTICAL ANSWERS

Common questions

Can Midtown assess a red eye or remove something from my eye?

We evaluate red eyes, conjunctivitis, iritis, and eye injuries, including superficial foreign bodies when appropriate. Call (831) 426-7172 first so the team can triage the problem and check availability. Some injuries require an emergency department or ophthalmologist.

Can you guarantee a same-day eye appointment?

No. Urgent appointment availability depends on the clinical situation and the schedule. Call for triage; do not wait for a routine online request if symptoms are severe or vision changes suddenly.

What should I do if an eye emergency happens after hours?

For sudden vision loss, severe pain, a serious injury, or chemical exposure, seek immediate emergency assessment, including when our office is closed. Use emergency services when needed. The appointment form, text messages, and email are not emergency monitoring services.
